The changes of translation norms. 1930 and 1953 as contexts of the translation of The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann. The author presents the preliminary considerations related to a planned study the purpose of which is to reconstruct the history of the Polish translation of Der Zauberberg (The Magic Mountain) by Thomas Mann and examine its impact on the Polish reception of the work. Biorąc za punkt wyjścia perspektywę historyczną oraz ewolucję kultury translacji w Polsce od lat 20. XX wieku aż po czasy współczesne, autorka analizuje stopniową zmianę paradygmatu w odniesieniu do roli i znaczenia przekładu literackiego. W dalszej części zostaje podjęta refleksja na temat wybranych lingwistycznych i estetycznych kryteriów oceny jakości przekładu, w celu zbadania, na ile produktywne może okazać się podejście interdyscyplinarne w tym zakresie. Szczegółowej analizie zostają poddane kryteria oceny jakości tłumaczenia zaproponowane przez Sigrid Kupsch-Losereit pod względem możliwości ich zastosowania do przekładów tekstów literackich.

Today, literary translation occupies a special place in the translation theory, despite the fact that some researchers consider the dichotomous division within the discipline into literary and non-literary texts as resolved and unjustified. This article is an attempt to present a breakdown of selected aesthetic and linguistic criteria for the quality assessment of literary translations in order to consider, on this basis, the validity of the interdisciplinary approach to the criticism of translation of literary texts. This article focuses on the English translation and reception of a major contemporary Hungarian novel, Ádám Bodor’s The Sinistra Zone. A fairly slim book, The Sinistra Zone was first published in 1992, established Bodor as a major writer and inspired a considerable amount of critical literature in Hungary. The article first gives an overview of the position of The Sinistra Zone in contemporary Hungarian literature and highlights some issues discussed by critics that are relevant for the discussion of the English translation and reception. Abstract Latvia's independence period saw translations on a massive scale. The range of source languages was growing, with English overtaking German (German was also the main intermediary language). The literature translated was also extremely varied, as was quality. The choice of works to be translated was in the hands of translators and publishers, who thought of marketing interests. The agents of translation (translators and publishers) pursued mainly defective stance in translation, while criticism staunchly supported defensive stance.
